The brick house that Nels and Emma Just finished in 1887 is a family treasure. It replaced a similar house built of wood. The lava rock cellar below and behind the house was used when the wooden house was in place, and actually predates the brick house by a few years.
The cellar was often Emma’s domain. It was where she washed clothes and churned butter.
The sod-roofed structure has been repaired many times over the years, most recently beginning in about 2011. The roof was removed in 2014, lava rock reseated and mortared, and work completed on windows and doors. Supporting structures were replaced as needed. A heavy duty liner was placed on the roof before the original dirt was placed back on top and smoothed over.
All the work was done by family members.
